Making Friends on the Road
One of the unexpected fun parts of this
trip has been the people we meet along the way. RVers enjoy chatting
about where they've been, tips for viewing certain areas, and
especially good tours to take. We have a lot in common with many of
the people we've met.
We have stayed in touch with a couple
we met early on, in Dawson Creek, connecting again for lunch in
Fairbanks, for dinner in Homer and again possibly in Ketchikan when
we get there. They winter in Florida – we'll include a visit with
them when we go south this winter. They are traveling in a small
trailer and have their adult son with them for the same two weeks
Becky and crew were with us.
The folks who helped us with our
flattening tire way back in British Columbia, turned up again at our
camp in Talkeetna. It was fun to reconnect with them. They were two
couples, two class A rigs traveling together – long time friends,
one from Texas and the other from Oklahoma.
At camp in Homer, a lady walking her
dog stopped, pointed at Kris, and said 'the painter'. She had
stopped and talked with us way back in Dawson Creek while Kris was
painting at the campsite. We had a lot of catching up to do. They
had just come from the same campground we were going to the next day.
They bought a small motor home 2 years ago to 'do' Alaska, with the
intent of selling the motor home when they got home. They had so
much fun that they kept the unit, and came back again this summer.
Another couple stopped and talked with
us because they'd heard Kris play the Ukulele at a campsite sing
along at a previous campground. They left portage and turned up as
our next door neighbors in Seward. We took a boat tour together in
Seward.
We will be meet with couple in
Anchorage who have the same manufacturer RV as we do – we met them
last fall at the 'rally' where we decided to buy such a unit. They
let us crawl all over their RV and answered tons of questions for us.
They were instrumental in our decision process. It will be fun to
see them again, on the road.
Tom has been corresponding and posting
on the Lazy Daze (the manufacturer of our unit) blog as we travel
along. He got a heads up about how terribly crowded Seward is on
weekends, so yesterday morning, as we were leaving the Portage
campsite, we quickly decided to flip-flop the itinerary to see Seward
mid-week, returning to Anchorage the following weekend. That worked
beautifully and we landed a waterfront campsite in Seward. Yippee !!
When we got to the camp in Seward, we found the blogger who provided
the information to thank her. She, a widow, and two other single
ladies were traveling together, each in their own Lazy Daze motor
home.
We look forward to meeting more folks
along the way.
Happy trails
Hi Tom and Kris,
ReplyDeleteThe two of you are an amazing couple. It does not surprise me that you make all kinds of friends along the way on your adventure.
Take care,
Dean
